With the Bristol Half Marathon only 8 weeks away it was time to do the first long distance run on my 9 week programme.

If you download and checkout week 1 day 7 of my day by day blueprint, you will see that the goal for today was to run 6 miles as fast as possible.

So myself and my wife (Sarah) went off to run two laps of the Durdham Downs in Bristol. I knew from past runs that it was at least 3 miles per lap so we set off this evening at 5pm and set about our first big run.

Actually Sarah is the reason I’m running this and my goal is to keep her company and help her get through it.

I’m dead proud of her today as a year ago Sarah couldn’t run 400m without getting puffed (she’s pretty heavily asthmatic). She has run a couple of 3 or 4 milers before today but this was the most she had ever done, and probably the most I had done for a few years so I was feeling pretty chuffed too!

So the results were that we actually ran 6.7 miles and the time was 1 hour 3mins 45 seconds.

Whilst we won’t break any records, it certainly is a good base line figure for us to achieve and should set us up for running close to two hours for the actual day.

Tomorrow is a nice rest and recovery day, I may do a short 10-15 minute hill walk or cycle tomorrow, to help with what I am expecting to be quite sore legs, and a good stretch.

As I said yesterday, I’ll be talking some more about heart rate and max heart rate.
